Save your work first
Is ChatGPT Down? What to Save Before Refreshing
If ChatGPT is failing mid-conversation, don’t refresh yet — copy or export what’s still on screen first. Live OpenAI status is on this page.

Before you refresh
Don’t refresh yet
A reload can wipe an unfinished reply, a Temporary Chat, or a Canvas draft that only exists on this tab.
- 01
Copy what’s visible
Grab your last prompt and any reply text already on screen — including code or tables. Stuck “Generating…” answers often never save.
- 02
Check Temporary Chat
Temporary Chats don’t show up in normal history unless you save them. If this one is temporary, save or copy before you leave.
- 03
Note Project / Canvas / Deep Research
Jot the Project name, Canvas title, or research question. Files usually survive; the unfinished turn often doesn’t.
- 04
Then retry carefully
After the draft is safe, try phone data or another browser. Rate limits and bad Wi‑Fi can look like a full outage.
By workflow
What you might lose — and what to do
ChatGPT often fails in pieces. Match what you were doing to the fastest save.
| What you were doing | Easy to lose | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Long coding / debugging thread | Context and the latest iteration | Copy the visible thread before refreshing |
| Deep Research | Sources, notes, unfinished report | Copy visible output + your research question |
| Canvas drafting | Half-edited doc only on this tab | Copy or export the Canvas text |
| Image generation iterations | Prompt stack and tweak rounds | Save prompts and good variants |
| File / PDF analysis | Chat context around uploads | Keep outputs + local copies of files |
| Temporary Chat | May never appear in history | Save the chat or copy everything useful |
| Projects | Failed turn (files usually stay) | Note project + question; copy the stuck reply |
Quick decide
Wait, refresh, or save?
Use this order when ChatGPT feels broken.
- 01
Thread still on screen?
Yes — save prompts and replies first; don’t spam refresh. No — check Chat history, and ask if it was a Temporary Chat.
- 02
Only replies failing?
UI loads but answers error or stick: keep the tab, wait or retry. Don’t clear the tab “to fix it.”
- 03
Whole page dead?
Check the status card above (chat, login, images, and API can fail separately). Try phone data if status looks fine.
- 04
Need this thread later?
Export or paste into a note now. OpenAI’s full account export is for archives — not this minute.
What is at stake
What usually survives vs what is at risk
Finished chats and unfinished generations behave differently.
Usually still there later
- Older conversations that already finished a turn
- Project files and project instructions
- Custom GPTs and account settings (once login works)
- Chats you already exported or synced elsewhere
Easy to lose right now
- The reply stuck on “Generating…” that never finished
- Unsaved Canvas / Deep Research drafts only on screen
- Temporary Chats you didn’t save
- Prompt iterations and image stacks typed once
Two different jobs
Official export vs save-this-chat-now
OpenAI’s data export and saving the conversation on screen are not the same thing.
Official OpenAI data export
Settings → Data controls. Full account archive — can take hours or days, and the download link expires. Not an instant save for the chat you’re staring at.
Save the open conversation now
Copy, export to Markdown / Word / PDF / Notion, or sync while the thread is still visible. That’s the outage-minute move.
After it recovers
How to pick the thread back up
Work from what you saved — not from memory.
Find it in ChatGPT history
Search the sidebar for the Project or title. Temporary Chats won’t be there unless you saved them.
Reuse what you copied or exported
Paste the prompt + reply into a new chat, or reopen the file / Notion page you saved mid-outage.
Skip full account export for this
Use OpenAI’s data export for an account-wide archive later — not to recover tonight’s unfinished answer.
If you want ongoing protection
Keep ChatGPT chats usable after an outage
Export the open chat, sync keepers to Notion, and search history already indexed on this device. Pactify doesn’t keep ChatGPT running — it keeps conversations you captured.
Export the open chat
Markdown, Word, PDF, or Notion while the conversation is still on screen.
Sync keepers to Notion
So Deep Research and Project notes aren’t trapped in one browser tab.
Search history on this device
Full-text search across chats you’ve already indexed — useful when the sidebar is noisy.

FAQ
ChatGPT down — FAQ
Is ChatGPT down right now?
Check the OpenAI status summary at the top of this page. “ChatGPT still down” often means one surface (chat, login, images, API) while another works. If only Deep Research fails, treat “is ChatGPT Deep Research down” as a feature outage — not necessarily the whole product.
Should I refresh ChatGPT if it is stuck generating?
Not first. Copy your prompt and any visible reply, then decide. Stuck generations often never save; a refresh can erase them.
Do Temporary Chats survive an outage?
Only if you saved them (or copied/exported the content). Temporary Chats don’t appear in normal history unless saved — an outage plus a refresh is a common way to lose them.
Does OpenAI’s data export save my current conversation instantly?
No. It’s an account-level archive that can take time, and the download link expires. For the chat on screen, copy or export that conversation now.
Will a ChatGPT outage delete my Projects or Custom GPTs?
Usually no. Availability drops; libraries stay. Unfinished generations and Temporary Chats are the fragile parts.
Can Pactify recover ChatGPT chats I never backed up?
No. It can export open chats, sync to Notion, and search history already indexed on this device — not invent chats that were never captured, and not generate new replies while ChatGPT is down.
